INDIA: ANTI-CATTLE
SLAUGHTER RULE
Meat curbs shadow on milk supply - Move anti-farmer as it makes cattle
rearing tougher, say meat sellers; ‘Violates right to food’
New Delhi: Govt's ban on cattle and buffalo sales for slaughter in
animal markets will hurt not just meat sellers but also farmers across
communities and could spark a milk shortage, meat dealers today said.
"This is a very impractical move. It is totally anti-farmer," said
Yusuf Quraishi, president of UP unit of the All India Jamiat-ul-Quraish. Most
of those engaged in slaughtering animals are Muslims from the Quraishi
caste."Usually, a farmer who owns a cow or a buffalo sells them only when
he is sure that he cannot get a drop of milk out of them. No one sells a milch
animal," Quraishi said."When an animal stops giving milk, the farmer
sells it at an animal market and uses the money to buy a new milch animal. This
cycle has existed down the ages and the Govt has disrupted that. This will break the
farmers' backs."Asked why farmers could not sell their old animals
directly to abattoirs instead of going to the animal markets, Quraishi said
that it would, for one thing, add to the farmers' costs."Till now he could
buy and sell at one venue; now he will have to make two separate trips. As it
is, transporting bovine animals has become a risky business because of the
vigilantes. Now, the farmer will be twice exposed."Salim, a meat seller in
Delhi, said the ban would affect not just the meat industry but also milk as
many farmers were already having second thoughts about continuing to rear
cattle. This is true not just of farmers from the minority community, he said,
but also of those from the majority religion as cow rearing has become a
hazardous occupation. Noida residents have been complaining about their milkmen
raising the price of milk by Rs 8 to Rs 10 per litre as soon as Yogi Adityanath
took charge as UP CM .The reasons the
milkmen are citing are: one, rearing cattle has become more expensive as the
value of the old animals has collapsed; two, the risks involved if the cow gets
injured have risen; three, chaara (fodder) prices have shot up.Quraishi cited
an instance of a farmer actually seeking police protection to take his ailing
cow to the vet for fear of the cow vigilantes."All this is becoming a
deterrent to rearing cows and other bovine animals. The gau rakshaks often
attack at the sight of anything that looks like cattle," he said."And,
if old non-productive animals are not allowed to be slaughtered or if
slaughtering them is made difficult, can you imagine the strain there will be
on fodder?" Quraishi added, echoing Salim: "With rapid urbanisation,
grazing grounds have become harder to come by; so the farmer must spend money
to buy fodder for his milch animals and the unproductive ones too. Why should
they want to rear cows under these circumstances? Wait and watch what happens
to the milk industry." telegraphindia
Meat traders plan legal action over new rules:Reuters
Kerala explores legal options against new cattle trade rule, outfits
hold beef fests
Left-ruled Kerala is exploring legal options to tide over the Centre’s
new regulation on cattle trade even as several youth outfits organised beef
festivals at many places on Saturday in protest. The new rule, among others,
bans trade of cattle for slaughter through animal markets besides restricting
their sale for agricultural purposes and taking the animals out of the state
without proper approval. The rule will hurt millions of poor farmers and squeeze
supplies to the country’s Rs 1 lakh-crore meat industry besides affecting
sectors which derive products from cattle carcass. CM Pinarayi Vijayan shot off a letter to the PM Narendra Modi saying the Centre cannot prepare
the menu and change the food habits of the people.“Today it is saying you can’t
eat beef, tomorrow it can say no to fish also. We will not allow this to happen
in our state,”CM said, warning that the
move will render many jobless. The state Govt has approached legal experts to explore ways
to check the new notification. Many youth organisations, including DYFI and the
Youth Congress organised beef festivals at many places. The Congress will
observe a black day on Monday.Meat traders now fear that the new notification
will embolden Hindu fringe outfits in neighbouring states and they will disrupt
transportation of animals to the state. There are 44 cattle markets across the
state and hundreds of truck loads reach these markets from Karnataka, Tamil
Nadu and Andhra.“Many truck drivers now refuse to carry cattle fearing attack.
The state will face a big shortage if transportation is disrupted in
neighbouring states,”said Kerala Cattle Merchants’ Association president KH
Kamaluddin. In Kerala, the annual demand of red meat is 2.3 lakh metric tonne.Since
cattle are not reared in a big way in the state, animals are ferried from other
states regularly. At least 5 lakh people in the state are involved in cattle
trade, slaughter houses and allied areas. hindustantimes

Protests in Kerala over Centre's new rules on cattle slaughter
Beef was cooked on the roadside and consumed in Kerala today in protest
against the Centre's ban on sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets, a
move which also came under attack in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and
Puducherry.Activists of the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF, opposition Congress-headed
UDF and their youth wings took out marches and organised beef fests across
Kerala, where beef is widely consumed. Demonstrations were held outside the
secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram where protestors cooked and distributed beef
on the roadside."We will eat beef to show our protest against the central Govt.
We want to tell this to PM Modi,"
DYFI national president Mohammed Riyaz, who led the protest, said.In Kollam
district, a group of Congress workers cooked beef in front of the DCC office to
register its opposition to the Centre's decision.District unit chief of
Congress, Bindu Krishna told reporters that "beef delicacy will be packed
and sent to head post office for delivery to Modi ji."In Kochi, Tourism
and Devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran participated in a 'beef fest',
where bread and beef curry was served, even as Youth Congress activists took
out a protest march in the city.In Thodupuzha in Idukki district, protesters
took out a march with the head of a buffalo.Reacting to the Centre's decision,
senior Congress leader and former Union minister AK Antony said the
notification should be "torn to bits" and "dumped in a
dust-bin". Congress-led UDF will observe 'black day' on Monday against the
ban, opposition leader in the assembly Ramesh Chennithala said in Thrissur.PTI

Modi Govt giving legal cover to its communal, divisive agenda: CPI-M
The political bureau of CPI-M has issued a statement to Environment
Ministry over the ban on cattle slaughter, saying the notification by the
ministry is an atrocious attempt by the PM Modi led-NDA Govt to give legal
cover to its wholly communal and divisive agenda to impose a diet code on the
country. "It will destroy the livelihood of crores of farmers involved in
animal husbandry, eliminate traditional cattle fairs, put an unfair burden on
farmers to care for useless cattle. This will further burden the farmers who
are increasingly resorting to distress suicides due to escalating input
costs," the statement read. The statement also added that the ban will
also have an impact on the leather industry and the meat export industry,
affecting the lives of crores of people."The notification is also an
encroachment on the rights of the states under whose jurisdiction such issues
fall," it further read.CPI (M) condemned and opposed the ban and demanded
is withdrawal. catchnews
VHP demands nationwide ban on cow slaughter
New Delhi: VHP has suggested the govt’s decision to ban the sale and
purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter would partially address
the issue. It also reiterated its demand for a nationwide ban on cow
slaughter.“The issue is cow slaughter and not only sale of cow. Govt must
immediately pass a national law to completely ban slaughter of cow and its
progeny,” VHP international working president Pravin Togadia said. He also
advocated bringing in a legislation to ensure life imprisonment to those
involved in cow slaughter.PTI

One civilian was killed and several others were injured in Kashmir on
Saturday after the killing of top rebel commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat sparked
protests across the valley, officials said. Govt cut off mobile internet as a precautionary
measure as the protests spread to capital Srinagar where people rushed to stock
fuel fearing prolonged violence, similar to the months-long protests that
followed the killing Wani last year. News of his death triggered violent
protests in Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, Sopore, Kupwara and Srinagar, and large
of the valley shut down. Witnesses said a young man was killed and several
other people were injured after forces fired on protesters near the site where
Bhat was killed. Police chief SP Vaid said the man was killed in

NHRC orders probe into ‘harassment’ of SIMI members lodged in Bhopal
jail
New Delhi: NHRC has ordered a probe into the alleged harassment of
suspected members of the banned outfit — SIMI — lodged in Bhopal Central
Jail. The rights’ panel directed its DIG to probe into the charges levelled by
the kin of 21 inmates before the commission.“Matter has been considered by the
commission and it is of the view that true facts need to be ascertained. DIG
(I) of the commission is requested to constitute a team, headed by a SSP to
conduct an on-the-spot investigation and submit their report at the earliest,”
said directions issued by the commission on Friday. The families had complained
to the commission on Wednesday that the inmates were being “humiliated,
physically assaulted and denied medical treatment” – charges which the jail
authorities rubbished. Out of a total of 29 suspected SIMI men lodged in Bhopal
jail since 2013, 8 were killed in Oct.2016, in an encounter. Kin of 4 inmates—
Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Javed, Mohammad Adil and Mohammad Zubair — all from
Ujjain, claimed that the harassment for these prisoners started after the
encounter. “As stated, on April 26, 2017, one of the under trial prisoner, Mohd
Iqrar during video conferencing stated before the Sessions Court that he is
being beaten up by the jail officials, daily after the incident of jail break
occurred. He is forced to shout anti-religion slogans and his beard has also

Muslim body moves Delhi HC against law to admit kids of all faiths
Delhi: A Muslim minority institution today moved the Delhi High Court
against a provision in the juvenile law which makes it mandatory to admit
children of all religions. The high court sought responses from the Centre and
the Delhi Govt on the institution's plea
challenging the provisions of 2015 Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act,
contending that these were violative of freedom to practice, propagate and
manage one's religious affairs guaranteed under the Constitution.A bench of
Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notices to
the Women and Child Development Ministry and the same department of the Delhi Govt
for Oct.13 on the plea by 'Bachchon Ka
Ghar', which claims to be a religious minority institution. The institution,
dependent on voluntary donations by affluent sections of the Muslim community,
said it provided boarding and education to orphan children on religious, moral
and technical grounds and it would not be conducive for it or the child of any
other faith to be admitted here."Moreover, there would always lurk a
danger of petitioner institution facing outrages from the public regarding
forcible religious conversions etc," said the plea, which sought to
declare certain provisions and rules of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection
of Children) Act, 2015 as violative of articles and ultra vires the
Constitution.Advocate Tushar Rao, who appeared for the institution founded in
1891, submitted before the court that the children were brought up in traditional
Muslim practices including attending 'namaz' in a mosque, teaching of religious
text, feeding non-vegetarian food, which the children from other faiths may not
be comfortable with."Children Welfare Committee (CWC) set up under the JJ
Act has been proposing to send children of other religious denomination to be
admitted to the institution which would be contrary to and violative of the
fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 25 and 26 read with article 14 of

After Kerala HC order, kin of Muslim convert forcibly take her home
Parents of the Muslim woman convert, whose marriage the Kerala High

could have been taken only with her parents’ active involvement. The court
order had come after Ashokan filed a habeas corpus plea. The court had also
asked police to help Akhila’s parents take her home. Akhila, 25, protested
against her parents while being taken out of a hostel in Kochi, where she was
lodged as per the court directive. She pleaded to the police to allow her to

Muslim-Dominated Malegaon, Bhiwandi Reject BJP in Maha Civic Polls
Counting for elections held in three municipal corporation in
Maharashtra – Panvel, Bhiwandi and Malegaon – concluded today, voting for which
took place on 24 May. The three parts saw a voter turnout of 55, 53 and 60
percent respectively. The elections are significant because the BJP tried to
make inroads into the Muslim-majority areas of Malegaon and Bhiwandi, from
where it fielded not only a record number of candidates, but also a record
number of Muslim candidates. The aim was to snub the Shiv Sena, which has been
threatening to exit its alliance with the BJP, which had brought them to power
in the 2014 Assembly elections. However, BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in both
areas, where the Congress party emerged as the winner. This was also the first
time civic body elections were being held in Panvel after its civic body was
upgraded to a municipal corporation last year, where the BJP emerged as the
single largest party. In an outreach move, BJP fielded 27 Muslim candidates this
time in Malegaon, where the party did not win a single seat five years ago.
Despite surprising victories in Pune, Amravati and Latur, the BJP won just 9
seats, coming in fourth. But it’s still an inroad as their tally has risen from
0 to 9. Congress and NCP-JD(S) are expected to take control of the civic body. thequint

communist ideology but that does not negate his nationalism,” Jisnu Basu, RSS’s
south Bengal general secretary, told HT. “He represents the true nationalist,

A manhunt is on in Sri Lanka for a hard-line Buddhist leader after a
