Shias must not meddle in triple talaq issue concerning mainly Sunnis:
Top cleric Kalbe Jawwad
Lucknow: Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, the general secretary of top Shia body
Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Hind, has urged the clerics of his community to stay away from
triple talaq controversy concerning mainly Sunnis. At meeting of
Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Hind, which was chaired by Jawwad, it was concluded that
triple talaq in one sitting is a concept predominantly followed by a section of
Sunnis, therefore Shias must not unnecessarily meddle into the controversy.
Majlis-e-Ulama meeting was held in Lucknow, where Shia clerics from Delhi, Tamil
Nadu, Kashmir, Kargil, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bengal, Lucknow and other parts of
UP attended. At meeting, Jawwad issued a
plain guideline to Shia clerics, urging them not to pick sides in the triple
talaq debate which has pitted the ruling dispensation against a vast section of
Sunni Muslims. “Those barging in are only doing so for political motives and to
create rift a Shia-Sunni rift,” he was quoted as saying by TOI.Although a
section of Shias have appeared against the archaic practice of triple talaq,
calling it ‘un-Islamic’, the community is evidently against the imposition of
Uniform Civil Code.Commenting on the issue, Jawwad said that not only Muslims – both Shias and Sunnis, but a large section of
Hindus are also against a common code of law as in several parts of the nation,
the constitution makers have safeguarded the regional and ethnic customs.Following
the meeting of Majlis, Jawwad, on behalf of Shia clerics, also vented his
opinion on Babri Masjid controversy. He pitched for talks between competing
parties to the case, opining that the disputed could best be resolved through
reconciliations.india.com

Triple talaq, polygamy not sanctioned by Islam: Govt to SC
New Delhi:Triple talaq and polygamy practised by many Muslims are not
sanctioned by Islam, Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday. Urging top court
to declare these practises unconstitutional, Centre asserted that they affected
the fundamental right of Muslim women to live in dignity and without any
security unlike women of other religions in the country. Arguments are part of
Centre’s written submissions that would be taken up by a 5-judge constitution
bench during the ensuing summer vacation. The bench will determine the validity
of the practises.Rebutting contentions put forth by Islamic organisations,
including All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Centre said constitutional
protection of freedom of religion guaranteed under Article 25 was not absolute

Law on
cow slaughter not feasible: senior officials
New

Many states criticise Bhagwat’s proposal on cow slaughter ban
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's demand for a countrywide law banning cow
slaughter has met with criticism, with stakeholders in states where the
slaughter is legal terming the suggestion "impractical" and against
their "cultural traditions". In BJP-ruled Assam, party's Minority
Morcha itself is uncomfortable with the suggestion, with its president Mominul
Awal saying it is "very unlikely" that it will be implemented. "Such
decisions will have to be taken keeping in mind the region, its tradition and
food habits. It has to be a unanimous," Awal said. The ruling CPM in
Tripura opposed Bhagwat's call with deputy speaker in the assembly Pabitra Kar
saying India cannot pursue a law which is against the secular fabric of
country."No Govt can interfere in choice of food of any community,"
Kar said.Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Sovan Chatterjee countered it
saying there is no point in pondering over such an "absurd" opinion.Kerala
law minister AK Balan called Bhagwat's suggestion "an aggression"
against food habits of people.Ex-spokesman of Syro Malabar Church, Father Paul

Minority minister on collision course with Waqf Board
Lucknow: UP Minority Affairs Minister Mohsin Raza waded into controversy

retort from its chairman, who saw "political reasons" in it. "Why

protest from Board Chairman Waseem Rizvi, who saw politics in the
matter."He (Raza) is trying to dissolve the Shia Waqf Board purely for
political reasons," Rizvi said.He claimed that news of Razas surprise

Muslim councillors stay out during Vande Mataram, return later
Meerut:
A week after there was stiff opposition against Meerut Nagar Nigam mayor's
decision to make singing of Vande Mataram mandatory in Nigam's board meetings,
in the Monday meeting, three Muslim councillors did not enter the hall until
the song was over. Their entry afterwards was not opposed by other
councillors.Earlier, there was a custom in which those who did not wish to sing
the national song were allowed to leave the hall and return later. On March 29,
mayor Harikant Ahluwalia had stated that once a person leaves the premises
before the singing of Vande Mataram begins, he or she would not be allowed to
come back. However, in what was seen as a softening of the stand, the three
councillors who arrived late were allowed to enter the hall. The meeting was
scheduled to start at 11am. The mayor waited for 45 minutes for all the
councillors to reach the hall and after that Vande Mataram was started. Once
the song was finished, Shahid Abbasi, Adil Ahmad and Arif Ansari, entered the
hall and took their seats. Speaking to TOI, Abbasi said, "We did not wish
to court any controversy this time so we did not come to the board meeting on
time at all. We entered only once the singing was finished. Nevertheless, our
stand is still the same. No one can be compelled to sing the national song. Had
it been the national anthem, we would have heartily participated." timesofindia

pay cuts deepen rift between PA & Hamas: aljazeera

Maysoon Abu Jumaa, 38, was extremely shocked when she received her paycheck for
March.Gaza-based science teacher regularly makes about $700 dollars in monthly
wages. Last month, she received $70.Abu Jumaa is one of tens of thousands of
employees for Palestinian Authority (PA) living in the besieged Gaza Strip ,
adversely affected by a decision that drastically reduced their salaries."I
am a mother of six orphans, and now I fear that my little children will be
without food," Abu Jumaa said as her voice trembled. The decision came into
effect last week, when the public sector workers for the PA received their March
salaries with between 30-70% in deductions, leading to the eruption of large
rallies in the impoverished coastal enclave.PA, a semi-Govt al body that
administers Israeli-occupied West Bank, has been at loggerheads with the Hamas
movement that governs the Gaza Strip since the latter seized control of the
strip in 2007 following its victory in elections. After Hamas, Gaza-based
resistance movement, seized power, PA instructed its employees in Gaza not to
attend work under Hamas rule. Those who decided not to attend work, were still
kept on PA payroll. But many others continued with their jobs, after a
religious decree in Gaza stipulated it was wrong to accept money if it is not
being earned. Abu Jumaa, who teaches at a secondary public school in Rafah, a
city in southern Gaza, has been placed in a serious financial peril as a result
of the cuts. She is completely helpless, faced with increasing familial
responsibilities. "This is unjust, how am I going to pay for tuitions and
