New Delhi:Opposition
parties led by Trinamool Congress on Friday charged the govt with trying to
create a ‘fear psychosis’ in West Bengal by deploying army units at toll plaza
without informing the state administration. Rajya Sabha witnessed noisy scenes
on Friday morning after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee spent the
night at govt secretariat in Kolkata, alleging that there was an attempt to
dethrone her by an army coup.The Centre clarified that the army was only
performing a routine duty of collecting data about trucks and other vehicles
that can be used during public emergencies. The government also maintained that
the West Bengal govt had been informed about this exercise that happens at
routine intervals. But the Opposition was not convinced.TMC leader Partha Chatterjee,
accused the Modi govt of using the Army for politics and said that the
situation is very unfortunate. “The manner in which Modi government is using
the Army for politics has never happened before. We have the highest respect
for the Army, but the situation is very unfortunate.” Speaking on the Army’s
statement that the state was informed he said, “We were not informed. We had
not given permission to Army.”“Army was deployed at 19 places in West Bengal without
the information of the state administration. There is an attempt to create a
fear psychosis amongst the people. I must remind this government that the
people of Bengal have fought against the British and they are ready to fight
against (PM Narendra) Modi’s autocracy as well,” Sukhendu Shekhar Roy of the
Trinamool Congress said in the Rajya Sabha.Before him, leader of Opposition in
the House, Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress had also raised the issue, wanting
to know why army’s deployment at some of the toll plazas in the state had

time that a chief minister of a state has had to spend the night in the
secretariat. I would like to the government to clarify on this,” Azad

govnt on Thursday , accusing it of trying to intimidate the state by stationing
Army trucks on national highways and at toll posts and raising the spectre of a
"civil war".Banerjee dug her heels in, saying she would not leave
Nabanna, Bengal secretariat, till the Army trucks moved off the road, even as
several of these trucks stayed at the toll post on Vidyasagar Setu, less than a
kilometre from the CM's office, around 11pm. Banerjee insisted that the
"interference" in a state's affairs was worse than what happened
during the Emergency ."This move is undemocratic, unethical,
unconstitutional and politically motivated. I head an elected government and I
am guarding democracy in Bengal. I won't hand it over to the Army ," she
added."An alarming news has reached me. I have cross-checked with police.
They (the Army) are checking vehicles on national highways. How can they do it
without informing us? The road belongs to the state. The state needs to be
informed before even running a mock drill.This only happens in an emergency
situation," the CM said. "What they have done in Bengal today may be
repeated in Bihar and Punjab tomorrow. And, in the process, the country is

NEW DELHI:The Supreme Court
on Friday asked the Union government to spell out the steps taken to ease the
suffering and inconvenience of people in rural areas, who are mostly dependent
on cooperative banks, post demonetisation.A bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur
and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, while hearing a batch of pleas challenging
various aspects of demonetisation, said all the parties should sit together and
prepare a list of categories of cases that could be referred to High Courts and
those that could be heard by the apex court. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi
said the government was aware of the situation in cooperative banks, which
lacked proper infrastructure and mechanism, compared to scheduled banks.“Entire
chapter in the additional affidavit filed by the Centre is dedicated to the
issue of cooperative banks. It is not that we are not aware of the situation
but these [the cooperative banks lack proper facilities, mechanism and proper
infrastructure as compared to scheduled banks,” he said.The government
deliberately kept cooperative banks out of the drive as these did not have the
expertise to detect fake currency.Senior advocate P. Chidambaram, appearing for
cooperative banks, questioned the government’s decision, saying the rural
economy is almost paralysed due to non-inclusion of cooperative banks.Senior
advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for one of the petitioners, suggested that they
will sit together and file the list of categories by Monday.The bench then

government's decision to pay its 42 lakh Group C and D employees Rs 10,000 each
in cash has one shocking fallout: a whopping 1.66 lakh ATMs, 82 per cent of
India's total cash machines, could have used that money to ease the serpentine
queues before them.As November ended and salaries were supposed to be paid, the
government decided to pay its Group C and D staff Rs 10,000 in cash to ease
pressure on the banks, already reeling for more than three weeks after
demonetisation was announced on November 8.Pay Commission figures say Group C
and D employees constitute nearly 89 per cent of the 47 lakh government
employees. If each is paid Rs 10,000, the total payment in cash sucked out of

biggest seizure since Nov 8, Rs 5.7 crore found - all in new Rs 2000 notes
In the biggest single cash
seizure of the new currency, an Income Tax raid on the premises of two
engineers and two contractors in Bengaluru found a whopping Rs 5.7 crore of
cash, all in the recently-introduced Rs 2000 notes.About Rs 90 lakh was also
found in old notes, which were banned after demonetisation came into effect
from November 9.Income Tax sleuths added that 7 kg gold and about 9 kg of
jewellery was also found in the raid, all valued at nearly Rs 5 crore. Several
property documents have also been found and seized.The major haul was from a
posh flat of Public Works Department engineer SC Jayachandra at upscale
Sanjaynagar in the city's northwest suburb.The sleuths also attached a
Lamborghini and Porsche limousines of Jayachandra, parked in the basement of
his multi-storey apartment.

last year, was arrested on Thursday for printing fake Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs
42 lakh in Punjab's town of Mohali.Abhinav Verma was arrested along with
accomplices -- his cousin Vishakha Verma and Ludhiana-based property dealer
Suman Nagpal -- by Punjab Police in Mohali and adjoining Chandigarh. The trio
was duping people by exchanging the demonetised Rs 500 and 1,000 notes for fake
Rs 2,000 notes printed by them. 3were even charging a 30% commission for the
exchange. Mohali SP (City) Parminder Singh said the fake currency was recovered
on Wednesday from a brand new luxury Audi SUV the trio were using. The vehicle
had a red beacon -- allowed only for VVIPs -- on it.The police have been
conducting raids to arrest two more members of the gang who slipped
away."The currency given by the gang (to their customers) even after

New Delhi:With the Central
government demanding transparency from its own MPs and people being forced to stand
in serpentine queues before banks in the wake of demonetisation move, a report
has emerged that a number of ministers had large cash holdings in their
possession as on March 31, 2016.As per the data assembled by the Commonwealth
Human Rights Initiative, only 40 out of 76 Ministers have divulged details
regarding the amount of cash they had in hand. The Code of Conduct for
Ministers requires them to declare their assets and liabilities in addition to
other financial dealings with PM‘s office annually.According to the CHRI
report, the biggest amount of cash in hand in the Council of Ministers was
declared by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley (more than Rs. 65 lakh).
Shripad Yesso Naik , Minister of State (Independent) and Hansraj Ahir, MoS
(Home) followed him with Rs. 22 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh respectively, The Hindu

Supreme Court ruled that all cinema halls shall play the national anthem before
a film starts and that all present should stand up, eminent jurist and ex-Attorney
General Soli Sorabjee questioned the order terming it as an example of judicial
over-reach.“In my opinion, the order is per incuriam (an order that is passed
in disregard of a binding authority),” he said. He hoped the bench would modify
its order at the next hearing.Asked why, Sorabjee said: “Is it the court’s
function to go into such issues? People must stand up…is it the only criterion
for showing respect to the national anthem? People may not be able to stand up
for physical reasons, people may not stand up for intellectual or religious
reasons because they may consciously believe that their religious beliefs,
consciously held, prevent them from standing up. The other thing is that they
(the bench) have not referred to the landmark judgment in Bijoe Emmanuel case.
Bilkul refer hi nahin kiya. Also, how will this order be implemented? Who will
count (how many people are standing and how many are sitting while the anthem
is playing)? Who will see if one can’t stand up due to physical problems or
some other reasons. And then, close the exit doors… what if there is an

Emmanuel case, the SC ordered a school in Kerala to take back three children it
had expelled for not singing the national anthem. The children didn’t sing the
anthem because of their conviction that their religion did not permit them to

Faisal had converted to Islam a year ago. The police have arrested 8 persons

According to the police, these people had threatened Faisal for converting to

32-year-old son told The News Minute that she converted to Islam to avenge her
son’s killing. “My son lost his life for no fault of his. Faisal, his wife and
their three children converted to Islam by their own volition. They never
harmed anyone by doing so. Yet he was killed…brutally. This is my way of
getting even with his killers. I too have converted to Islam exercising my own
free will. I will now spend the rest of my life with my son’s wife and
children,” Jameela avers. She goes on to explain that when Faisal was alive, he
and his family lived at the family homestead along with his parents. He
continued to do so even after converting to Islam. Both his father and mother
had no issues with their only son’s conversion.Jameela left the house home the
day Faisal’s body was brought home. She now stays at a relative’s -who
converted to Islam a few years ago- house a few kilometers away, along with
Faisal’s wife and children. Though her husband Ananthan Nair chose to stay
back, he did not object to her conversion.“Though Faisal and his family used to
do ‘niskaaram’ at home, it never bothered us. I found no reason to intrude into
their lives. I now ask his kids to instruct me in their religious ways. When
they pray, I observe and follow suit. I have started covering my head,” shares

Friday appointed a Gujarat cadre 1984 batch IPS officer, Rakesh Asthana, as the
new in-charge of CBI. He is considered to be close to Prime Minister Narendra
Modi and BJP leader Amit Shah.The decision has come a day before the current
CBI Director Anil Sinha demits office. He was appointed Asthana as additional
director in CBI in April this year.Asthana, who was the first to declare the
Godhra train fire of February 2002 as a “carefully planned and meticulously
executed criminal conspiracy” was made in-charge of the premiere investigation
agency, after the government could not finalise the name for the new CBI

for the agency as soon as the BJP-led government took office in 2014. But the
Indian Police Service or IPS officer of the 1984 batch is not even on the panel
of about six officers in line to be the next chief. The frontrunner based on
seniority, Special Director RK Dutta, was removed from the race in a sudden
transfer on Wednesday night to another department in the Home Ministry.That

IRF school row: Parents
threaten legal action
Mumbai: Parents of the
Islamic International School, Mazgaon, founded by Zakir Naik, who is under
investigation, have threatened legal action if the school is taken away from
the IRF and handed over to another organisation. The school’s parents-teachers
association (PTA) wrote to education minister Vinod Tawde on Thursday, opposing
the proposed change in management. They demanded time until April-May — when
the academic year ends — to decide the school’s fate. The petition was a
response to education officials on Monday asking parents to withdraw their
children from the school because it does not have the required permits. Tawde
has given students a choice between shutting down the school altogether or
handing over its management to a trust like Anjuman-i-Islam, which runs 100
educational institutes in Maharashtra. But parents are worried the studies will
be disrupted if the department shuts the school or changes management mid-term.
“Both these actions will disturb our children’s education. We will move court
challenging the government’s decision,” said Mustafa Shaikh, a parent, whose
three children study in the school. Parents complained the government is
targeting them. “There are hundreds of schools that don’t have registrations or
NOC from the government, but only our school is facing action,” said Mouzan
Armar, another parent from Tardeo. Armar said handing over the school to
another Muslim management will not assure the same quality of education. “We
chose this school because of its management. If the management changes, we
won’t want to continue with the school,” said Armar. School principal Imran
Qureshi said even though parents might be looking for other schools, they have
not received any applications for withdrawal yet. “It will be a cultural shock
for students to shift to other schools,” said Qureshi. Meanwhile, Zahir Kazi,
president of Anjuman-I-Islam, said they are open to acquiring the school if the
government approaches them. “As of now, the department hasn’t asked us
anything. We have a lot of experience in running educational institutes so the
quality won’t be compromised,” said Kazi.HT

un-Islamic while opposing any proposals for a uniform civil code. While even

is significant as the Jamiat is the largest organisation of imams in India. The

of triple talaq. Quoting the resolution passed at the Ajmer gathering, Madani
said, “The session condemned talaq at
one go and appealed to every section of Muslim society to make strides to
eliminate it.”The resolution added, “We have to wage jihad against the wrong
practices prevalent in nikah and talaq. We have to spearhead the movement to
give proper rights to women in accordance with Islam. We will strive to insert
such clauses in the nikahnama that will resolve any disputes in martial
life.”Admitting that a Law Commission questionnaire on “reforms” in personal
laws had provoked fears of an attempt to push a uniform civil code, Madani
said, “PM has spoken on this and his credentials on this are suspect. So we are
not concerned about what he has said. But we feel women in Islam have been
given their due and we must ensure that happens practically. That is central to
Islam.”Madani said the Jamiat had started persuading people to adopt the kabin

New UN tally shows spike in

Close to 2,000 members of
the Iraqi security forces were killed in November across the country, along
with hundreds of civilians, UN said on Thursday.According to the UN mission in
Iraq's monthly tally, 1,959 Iraqi forces were killed last month and at least
450 others wounded.The toll includes members of the army, police engaged in
combat, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, interior ministry forces, and pro-govt
paramilitaries, it said.Halgord Hekmat, a spokesman for the autonomous Kurdish
region's Peshmerga ministry in Iraq, said on Thursday a total of 1,600
Peshmerga soldiers have been killed since the start of the offensive to retake
the ISIL-held Iraqi city of Mosul on Oct.17.UN statement said at least 926
civilians were also killed, bringing to 2,885 the number of Iraqis who have

a playground. Now, the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has detailed how
children in Iraq and Syria are suffering as efforts go on to end ISIS presence
in these two countries. The situation, it says, is dire in Syria, where 84
schools have been bombed in 2016 alone. It is probably much worse in Iraq, or
more specifically Mosul, where the UN body claims 300,000 children have lost

Gen Raheel Sharif offered
to join Pak Jamaat for ‘dry-cleaning politics’

Pakistan (JI) has offered General Raheel Sharif - the retired chief of the army
staff - to join the party for holding an 'operation' in politics like the
successful Zarb-e-Azb military action against terrorism during his tenure in
the Pakistan Army. This offer was formally given by Dr Waseem Akhtar, the only
legislator of the Jamaat-e-Islami in the Punjab Assembly from Bahawalpur during
the assembly proceedings on Thursday. Highlighting the political situation on a
supplementary question during Question Hour in the House, the Jamaat leader
said that he formally invited General Sharif to join them as a politician after
two years as per national laws and rules and regulation for the army officer.
Paying rich tribute to General Sharif, he said that the former army chief had
maintained law and order by holding a successful military operation against
terrorists in the country so such an act was also needed in politics. For such
a purpose, he should join the Jamaat. Interestingly, when Dr Waseem tabled his
offer to a retired general to join Jamaat against the party's political
hierarchy and procedure of joining, the ruling PML-N lawmaker Nadeem Kamran
