Burning Manu Smriti: At JNU, caste trumps Hindutva
New Delhi: With a sitting vice-president of the JNU unit of the ABVP,
RSS’ student affiliate, burning the Manu Smriti on the campus on International
Women’s Day on Tuesday, something unprecedented in the Sangh Parivar’s history
happened. While Dr. BR Ambedkar — who was also India’s first Law Minister — had
indeed burnt the document, associating it with inequality, it was in sync with
the radical Dalit politics he espoused. But this time the challenge comes from
within Hindutva — which finds Hindu traditions to be meaningful — though the
challengers are already marginal within and seem to be on the verge of staging
an exit.Present with Jatin Goraya, JNU ABVP unit vice-president, who is a Dalit
from Haryana, were Pradeep Narwal and other students who have moved away from
ABVP since the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar — out on bail now —
under sedition law. Clearly, young Dalit leaders who had associated with
Hindutva’s Dalit outreach seem to have moved away ideologically as the ABVP has
clashed with the Ambedkar Students’ Association at Hyderabad University — where
Rohith Vemula committed suicide — and with the Left union at the JNU.“These are
contradictions between Hindutva and Dalits surfacing in the wake of recent
controversies. Hindutva does not know how much to shift its line to accommodate
Dalits, who are also Ambedkarites. And young Dalits also cannot adapt to it
beyond a point. This contradiction is already playing out in this case,” said
Badri Narayan, who teaches social exclusion at the university. the hindu
RSS’ wings ABVP burns Manusmriti copies in JNU
JNU students, including former and current members of the ABVP, burnt
copies of the Manusmriti to protest against “derogatory verses” in the Hindu
religious text. The students chose International Women's Day to send out the
message that anything derogatory towards women will not be tolerated. “Today is
women’s day and in order to oppose the derogatory remarks made against women in
Manusmriti, we have burnt certain portions of the text,” said Jatin Goraiya,
vice-president of the ABVP unit in JNU. The students burnt the pages of the
text that contained 40 “derogatory” references against women. Some of the
points included “2/213. It is the nature of the women to seduce men in this
world, for that reason the wise are never unguarded in the company of females”
and “2/214. Women, true to their class character, are capable of leading astray
men in this world, not only a fool but even a learned and wise man. Both become
slaves of desire”.Pradeep Narwal, who recently left the ABVP citing
“ideological differences,” was one of the main organisers of the event. He read
out the 40 points before burning the pages of the text.“I have problems with
these 40 points that are derogatory towards women and Dalits. If anyone thinks
I am not right, they can tell me,” he said. The students raised slogans such as
Manuwad ho barbad, Brahmanwad ho barbad and Jatiwad ho barbad. The Hindu

JNUSU condemns ‘divisive slogans, media trial against Umar Khalid’
New Delhi: In a meeting held late Monday, JNUSU unanimously passed
resolutions condemning the “destructive and divisive slogans” that were
allegedly raised during an event in campus on Feb.9. The student body also
condemned the “witch-hunt and media trial that has particularly targeted Umar
Khalid based on his immediate religious identity.” “JNUSU reiterates its
condemnation of the destructive and divisive slogans that were allegedly raised
on the 9th of Feb. Such slogans do not represent the democratic ethos of JNU
and are detrimental in the united struggle against the communal-fascist
forces,” JNUSU said in one of the resolutions.“This council demands the
immediate release of Umar and Anirban. It condemns the witch-hunt and media
trial that has particularly targeted Umar Khalid based on his immediate
religious identity. This Council gives the mandate to file defamation suit

New headache in Valley: Crowds swelling at militant funerals, Indian
Express report
Srinagar: ON Monday, as thousands poured into Kulgam for the burial of
Dawood Ahmad Sheikh, a Hizbul Mujahideen commander killed by security forces in
an encounter the previous night, villagers were forced to delay the burial by
at least 90 minutes — and conduct three funeral prayers. While J&K police
and the army have achieved significant success against militancy in south
Kashmir in recent months, it is also facing a disturbing trend — growing
support for militants in the form of a large number of mourners at their
funerals.“It is something that has been happening for a long time now. It is a
matter of concern and we are looking into means and ways to control it,” Javed
Mujtaba Gilani, IG, Police, Kashmir, said. According to senior police officers,
the new phenomenon has its origins in the glamourised version of militancy
symbolised by its modern day poster boy, 21-year-old Hizbul commander Burhan
Muzaffar Wani.So much so, an officer said, that when militants are trapped,
youth help them escape by assembling at encounter sites and hurling stones at

the 48-year-old blogger and ex-journalist was no threat to society, but just a

becoming a terrorist. I am a patriotic Muslim. I presumed perhaps Iraq will be
divided into several regions and ISIS will rule one part of it. I thought they

opportunity for me if I became their political spokesperson," he told

to officials at the Iraq embassy and asked them to forward it to the terrorist
group. He said he was the editor-in-chief of a newspaper called Journalist for
International Peace and wanted to become the outfit's spokesperson. Days after
he was detained by the police, he made a U-turn and said that Daesh did not
respect humanity. Finally, after
several months of joblessness and despair, the ATS decided to look for a job

IS 'minister of war' likely killed in US air strike, say US officials:
Reuters
Washington: An Islamic State commander described by the Pentagon as the
group's "minister of war" was likely killed in a US air strike in
Syria, US officials said on Tuesday, in what would be a major victory in the
United States' efforts to strike the militant group's leadership.Abu Omar
al-Shishani, also known as Omar the Chechen, ranked among America's most wanted
militants under a US program that offered up to $5 million for information to
help remove him from the battlefield. Born in 1986 in Georgia, which was then
still part of the Soviet Union, the red-bearded Shishani had a reputation as a
close military adviser to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was
said by followers to have relied heavily on Shishani. The strike itself involved
multiple waves of manned and unmanned aircraft, targeting Shishani near the town
of al-Shadadi in Syria, a US official said. The Pentagon believes Shishani was
sent there to bolster Islamic State troops after they suffered a series of
setbacks at the hands of US-backed forces from the Syrian Arab Coalition, which
captured al-Shadadi from the militants last month.Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook
said the US military was still assessing the results of the strike, but
acknowledged its potential significance. Shishani "was a Syrian-based
Georgian national who held numerous top military positions within ISIL,
including minister of war," Cook said, using an acronym for the group.
Cook said Shishani's death would undermine the group's ability to coordinate
attacks and defend its strongholds. It would also hurt Islamic State's ability
to recruit foreign fighters, especially those from Chechnya and the Caucus
regions, he said.An official in the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which has been
fighting Islamic State in the al-Shadadi area, said it had received information
that Shishani was killed but had no details and had been unable to confirm the
death.

"staring" at her.The pair had flown from Boston to Los Angeles in US
without incident but were singled out after the JetBlue passenger plane landed,

coworker that she "did not appreciate" being stared at by the women,
The Sun reported."The flight attendant had casually relayed to a coworker
that she did not appreciate being stared at - she did not seem rattled or
scared - just smug," said Sharon Kessler, who was on board the
flight."Then - after we landed - she announced that the authorities would
be boarding the plane and to remain in our seats with seat belts," she
pointed out."It was a terrible moment - honestly - these women sat
quietly, watched movies - it felt like overkill from this flight
attendant," Kessler wrote on her Facebook. manoramaonline
