Umar Khalid's father SQR Ilyas says he received call 'threatening to
kill' his son, lodges complaint
New Delhi: The father of Umar Khalid, Syed Qasim Illyas Rasool on Friday
lodged a complaint with Delhi Police claiming that he received a phone call
"threatening to kill" his son (Umar) if he doesn't leave the
country.Several police teams are looking out for Khalid in connection with the
sedition case registered over the controversial event at JNU campus last week,
which led to the arrest of the varsity's students' union president Kanhaiya
Kumar.Syed Qasim Illyas Rasool in his complaint claimed that he received the
phone call around 5 pm when he was in office. "The caller identified
himself as Mumbai-based gangster Ravi Pujari, threatened Rasool that he would
kill his son Umar if he doesn't leave the country," police said quoting
the complaint lodged by Rasool.Umar's sister Maryam Fatimah told PTI that her
younger sisters have received threats over the past few days on social media.
Umar's father also asked police to provide security to his family.Meanwhile, a
Delhi-based journalist, who is a friend of Umar Khalid, has been questioned by
Delhi Police about the whereabouts of Khalid.The journalist, Sadiq Naqvi, was
at Bijnor in UP when a team of Delhi Police officials approached him on Friday,
following which he was questioned about Khalid's whereabouts. They also asked
him to come to Delhi and Naqvi is presently on his way. The developments have
been confirmed by a senior official in south district of Delhi Police.Naqvi was
Khalid's classmate in Delhi University, where they both pursued graduation
together. "It was routine questioning and I shall make myself available
for another round of questioning once I reach Delhi," Sadiq told
PTI.Khalid is one of the ten youths who the police are looking out for in
connection with the event in JNU in which anti-India slogans were allegedly
raised.Delhi Police has conducted a numbers of raids in Maharashtra, Jammu and
Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, UP and Bihar in search for 10 persons, including
Khalid, in connection with the case of alleged sedition for which JNUSU

New Delhi: Umar Khalid, a student seen chanting slogans calling for the
independence of Kashmir and making remarks in support of terrorist Afzal Guru,
remains missing nearly a week after he organized an event that the government
has described as "anti-national" at Delhi's JNU or JNU.Khalid's
father today told NDTV, "I don't subscribe to some of the slogans Umar

commissioner B S Bassi of "influencing" the probe in the sedition

Students, scholars and teachers from around the world have rallied to
speak up against the Centre's action against the students of JNU. After a virtual
who's-who of world academia sent out solidarity letters, institutions including
Oxford University and the University of Chicago have also sent in their
support. Universities from across California issued a letter signed by 358
academicians. In it, they condemned the harassment of students for their
political beliefs. The letter called the police crackdown on the students an
"alibi for the incursion of an authoritarian regime onto the university
campus". It said that the whole fraternity is extremely concerned about
the situation unfolding at JNU and refuse to remain silent as colleagues face
such atrocities in the hand of the authorities. They also urged the V-C of JNU
to protect members of the university community and safeguard their rights. The
letter was also signed by the Students for Justice in Palestine of University
of California, Berkeley, South Asia Graduate Students’ Association,UCLA and

JD(U) opposes move to withdraw minority status of AMU, Jamia
New Delhi: JD (U) president Sharad Yadav on Friday protested against an
alleged move by the govt to withdraw the minority status for the Aligarh Muslim
University (AMU) and the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), saying it will infringe on
the rights of Muslims and will be against the Constitution.He said in a
statement that there was “unrest” in the community over the issue. “It is
against the Constitution and secular fabric of this country. It is absurd that
the institutions made by the minority community will lose their minority status.
It will not only demoralise them, the public at large will also feel threatened
as it will show that the Constitution and the Acts passed in Parliament have no

its character as a minority institution now finds itself in another controversy
this time over beef. The issue broke out on social media yesterday when a
WhatsApp post circulated a report that 'beef biryani' was being served at the
AMU Medical College canteen, an allegation promptly denied by the university. A
report which went viral on social media yesterday has alleged AMU Medical
College canteen of serving 'beef biryani'.The report that was widely circulated
via Whatsapp group has landed the AMU into 'beef controversy'.The reports
spread the impression that it was cow meat and not the meat of buffalo that was
being served. A picture of the canteen's menu card also went viral on social
media.However, the university has promptly denied all the allegations.As news
of the controversy spread, senior AMU officials led by University Proctor M
Mohsin Khan rushed to the Medical College canteen and carried out an
on-the-spot preliminary check. University spokesperson Rahat Abrar alleged that
the incident was a "malicious" attempt to defame the institution,
asserting that the beef mentioned in the menu was of buffalo meat."It is
nothing but a malicious propaganda to defame this institution. I can say with
confidence that the beef biryani mentioned in the menu card pertains to buffalo
meat and there is no iota of evidence to suggest to the contrary," he

GHIAL drags minorities panel to court over mosque issue
Hyderabad: The face-off between GMR Hyderabad International Airport
Limited (GHIAL) and the State Minorities Commission (SMC), over a petition
pertaining to the construction of a mosque on the airport premises, took a
legal turn with GHIAL now dragging the minorities panel to the Hyderabad High
Court. As was previously reported in these columns, one Mohammed Riyaz had
sought the SMC's intervention to construct a mosque on a land parcel within the
airport premises as around 300 Muslim employees, including porters and taxi
drivers, were forced to pray out in the open and in harsh weather conditions.
Acting on his appeal, the commission had issued a show cause noti ce to GHIAL. GHIAL,
however, in a writ petition has now challenged the jurisdiction of the SMC and
described the show cause notice issued on February 8 as illegal, arbitrary and
unconstitutional. It also contended that the notice was in violation of the
fundamental rights of the company and sought an order to set aside all action
of the commission in connec tion with the case, including the notice. SMC chairman Abid Rasool Khan, meanwhile,
told TOI that he had received a memo from K Siddharth Rao, lawyer for the GMR
managing director and chief executive officer of the airport, on Thursday informing
the commission about GHIAL's petition in court. "We have sent our advocate
on record to the HC as we have the highest regard for the judiciary and we will
respect the decision. In the court, our lawyer has said that it is routine
practice to send show cause notices to the concerned individuals or parties
after petitions are received and cases are registered.This is mandated by the
AP SMC Act of 1998. If any untenable petitions are received we close the case.
The notice sent to GMR was to inquire the ground realities in an impartial

said that they have formed three different types of committees for this, who

rival Palestinian groups Hamas and Fatah have reached a tentative agreement
aimed at implementing a reconciliation deal signed in 2014 between the 2
movements.Analysts, however, believe the two rival movements have to agree a
unified political platform for helping render the reconciliation deal a
success.In a statement, Hamas said it has reached a “practical vision” with
Fatah with a view to implementing the reconciliation deal and healing the

US-backed fighters capture IS-held town in northeast Syria: monitor
Beirut: A US-backed alliance of Syrian fighters including the Kurdish
YPG militia captured an Islamic State-held town in Syria's northeast on Friday,
the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.The capture of
al-Shadadi in Hasaka province came three days after the beginning of an
offensive against Islamic State in the area by Syria Democratic Forces backed
by US-led air strikes, and would help isolate Raqqa, the jihadists' de-facto

US strikes Islamic State in Libya, killing 40 people: Reuters
Tripoli: US warplanes carried out air strikes against Islamic
State-linked militants in western Libya on Friday, killing as many as 40 people
in an operation targeting a suspect linked to two deadly attacks last year in
neighbouring Tunisia. It was the second US air strike in 3 months against
Islamic State in Libya. The Pentagon said it had targeted an Islamic State
training camp and killed a Tunisian militant linked to major attacks on
tourists in Tunisia.The mayor of the Libyan city of Sabratha, Hussein
al-Thwadi, told Reuters the planes struck at 3:30 a.m. (0130 GMT), hitting a
building in the city's Qasr Talil district, home to many foreigners.Reuters
Polish magazine sparks outrage by featuring model depicting 'Islamic
Rape Of Europe' on cover
Polish magazine 'wSieci' or 'The Network' sparked worldwide outrage
after the magazine's latest edition featured a seemingly racist cover of a
picture of a screaming blonde, white woman draped in European Union flag while
she is being groped by dark-skinned hands. The cover also has a caption titled
'Islamic rape of Europe' depicting that the woman is being raped by the
refugees.The magazine cover which contains the disturbing image tried to suggest
that the influx of the refugees in the European Union has increased the rape
cases in the region and the 'Islamic' refugees are the ones to be blamed for
it. The magazine also contained several related stories on the topic of sexual
assault and rape of women in Cologne, Germany. The edition particularly had
accounts of sexual assaults on New year's eve where reportedly around 1,000
complaints were filed Cologne. However, according to reports, very few of the
identified perpetrators in the Cologne attack were refugees. dnaindia
