Sword-weilding 'Hindu Sena' threaten meat shop
owners in Gurugram to shut shop during Navratri
Gurugram: Fringe elements under the banner of
'Hindu Sena' were caught on camera walking the streets of Dundahera gaon of
Gurugram in Haryana to force meat shop owners to close down their businesses
owing to the commencement of 'Navratri', a seasonal nine-day festival observed
as per the Hindu calendar twice a year. This is not the first time such an
attempt to thwart law and order by fringe groups was witnessed in Gurugram,
earlier known as Gurgaon. In the video, several men brandishing swords can be
seen marching through the streets of Gurugram, unabated by city police. These
men were reportedly trying to scare meat shop owners into closing down their
businesses for the duration of the nine-day festival. Similar instances were
reported from Gurugram last year where men carrying sticks and weapons
threatened and in some cases, even assaulted meat shop owners in order to force
them to pull the shutter on their businesses.times now news
SDMC’s new meat policy not practical: Vendors
NewDelhi:Slaughterhouses must ensure proper
disposal of waste, but the private concessionaire is not obliged to pick up the
organic waste from the trash dumps. Killing of chicken was stopped in Ghazipur
without providing for an alternative slaughterhouse. These are just two of the
confusing implementation of the meat policy that came up for discussion when
municipal corporation officials, meat vendors and activists sat down for an
interactive workshop on Saturday.South Delhi Municipal Corporation recently
implemented a new meat policy with strict regulations and proscribing animal
cruelty, violations of which attract stiff fines and penalties. But things
haven’t changed much and animals and birds crammed into hot cages, poor
transportation conditions and roadside slaughter are not rare even in posher
areas. Workshop was organised in collaboration with SDMC by Federation of
Indian Animal Protection Organisations for meat vendors from south Delhi areas
such as Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas, Safdarjung Enclave, Hauz Rani, Sangam Vihar
and Mehrauli. Sarita Joshi of FIAPO briefed them the new regulations, including
proper waste disposal, no employing of workers below 18 years, need for
spacious cages for chicken, and use of deep freezers and black glass
doors.Delhi Meat Merchants Association urged civic officials to set up a
slaughterhouse to ease supplies after culling chicken at Ghazipur was stopped
seven months ago. An SDMC official responded, “A 23-acre plot is being
developed into a pork facility. A similar one for birds is also being
considered.”TOI
J&K Opposition goes to EC: Withdrawal of
security cover bid to disable us
J&K Governor’s administration has
withdrawn or downgraded security cover to over 700 mainstream political
leaders, former ministers and former legislators — a step that 3 major
political parties in Valley, NC, PDP and Congress have called a “sinister plan”
to “incapacitate the entire Opposition during the election process”. A top
Election Commission official confirmed that the poll panel has received
complaints from these three parties. “Election Commission will advise the state
that if you won’t provide security, you are disturbing the ecosystem because
unless they (political workers) are secured, they cannot go for campaigning and
canvassing which is an important element in election process,’’ he said. indian

Highway Ban in Kashmir Sparks Outrage,
Comparisons With Israel
Anantnag: Banning of civilian vehicular
movement on 270-kms stretch from Udhampur to Baramulla districts of National
Highway 44 in Kashmir has drawn the ire of locals across the political,
ideological and occupational divide. An April 3 order from the state’s home
department said that the highway will be completely banned until May 31 for
civilian traffic on Sundays and Wednesdays from 4 am to 5 pm to “facilitate the
movement of security forces convoys” into the Valley. The official order
attributes this move to the ongoing movement of security convoys into Kashmir
to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming parliamentary elections. This ban
has come on top of the daily stoppages on civilian traffic at multiple
locations across the highway that also facilitate the movement of army and
paramilitary convoys. As the highway is the only stretch of road that connects
the Valley to the outside world, order is likely to cause heavy disruptions in
day-to-day lives of Kashmiris. This includes medical patients, schoolchildren,
business owners, government employees, farmers and orchardists as well as
drivers of public transport.“Due to the frequent closure of this highway on
account of landslides and bad weather, we already have a one-way traffic system
for commercial vehicles. That, essentially, gives us only three days in a week
to export our locally-manufactured goods. After this order, we effectively get
two days,” Sheikh Ashiq, the president of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and
Industry – oldest and most prominent traders’ association in the region – told
The Wire.“This ban will be devastating, not just for the traders in Kashmir,
but also other sectors like education and tourism. I don’t think they have applied
their mind before passing this order,” he added.Bashir Ahmad Basheer, chairman
of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers-cum-Dealers Association, agreed. “We won’t
be able to even visit our orchards, let alone export the fruits that lay in
cold storages across Kashmir,” Basheer said. While the government has assured
that the ban doesn’t apply in cases of medical and other emergencies, locals
believe that the order is still unjustified and troublesome.ban is also set to
impact the livelihood of private cab drivers who shuttle thousands of
passengers into different districts of Kashmir every week. Both mainstream, as
well as separatist politicians, have also expressed dismay over this order.
Taking to Twitter, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, who have previously served
as chief ministers of the state govt, termed it “hare-brained” and outright
“mad”. Shah Faesal, who recently floated a new political party after resigning
from the civil services in protest, also said that his party will challenge the
ban in court.Calling it a dictatorial move on Twitter,Mirwaiz Umar Farooq,
chairman of the separatist Hurriyat Conference group, urged the govt “to
withdraw this diktat and stop punishing people of Kashmir”. thewire

Electoral Bonds Have Legalised Crony
Capitalism: Ex-Chief Election Commissioner
SY Quraishi
Coming down heavily on the Centre's electoral
bond scheme for funding of political parties, former Chief Election
Commissioner SY Quraishi on Friday termed the move a retrograde step and said
electoral bonds have legitimised and legalised "crony capitalism".In
an exclusive interview to Outlook, Quraishi said that the move is totally
"inconsistent" with what was promised. Electoral bonds were introduced by BJP-led
NDA govt in Jan. 2018 with an aim to make funding to political parties
transparent. It allows a political donor to purchase bonds from authorised
banks which can be redeemed by parties only through registered accounts in a
prescribed time frame. Govt's move was resisted by opposition parties and
analysts who argued the scheme was counterproductive. The sale of electoral
bonds has skyrocketed ahead of the Lok Sabha elections by 62 per cent as
compared to last year with the SBI selling bonds of over Rs 1700 crore,
according to an RTI based report. Before the scheme was introduced, any
donation of over Rs 20,000 was reported to the EC, said Quraishi, arguing that
the provision allowed the commission to know "who had given how much to
whom". outlookindia
Ensure 90% Votes for BJP, Else Face Violence:
Manipur Insurgents Threaten Village Heads
Guwahati: Ahead of Lok Sabha elections,
village heads of Manipur are being threatened by the Kuki National Army to
ensure that 90% votes are cast for BJP, otherwise they will be summoned and
held responsible, then punished. Thangboi Haokip, the Commander of the KNA has
issued the diktat at a gathering in D Muonnaphai village, Moreh where the village
chiefs were present. Referring to BJP candidate for outer Manipur, HS Benjamin
Mate, he warned that if required violence will be resorted to. KNA commander
said that despite a lack of active female police or force within the group, a
special force comprising 200 women has already been assigned for the polling
day (April 11). “Whether men or women, nobody will be spared if they the diktat
is not followed,” he said.Haokip further claimed to have informed the ‘Gaon
Bura’ or the head of the village that he needs free movement and may even open
fire on the day of polling. There are 21 polling stations in Moreh area and
they will check poll percentage and requires a minimum 90% votes.Kuki National
Organisation and its arm – the KNA were formed in 1988. The first batch of
cadres, under the command of Thangkholun Haokip, was trained by the Kachin
Independent Army in Myanmar. The KNA has an estimated strength of 600 cadres
armed with an array of weapons like AK-Series, G-series, M-series and 60mm
mortar. Main objectives of the KNA is to bring all the Kuki-inhabited areas
separated by the artificial boundary created in 1935 (specifically in the Kabaw
valley of Myanmar) in Manipur under one administrative unit called ‘Zalengam’
(Land of freedom). In case the integration is not realised, KNA aims at the
creation of two Kuki states: one within Burma, ‘Eastern Zalengam’ and other
within India, ‘Western Zalengam’.news18
6 yrs later refugees of Muzaffarnagar riots
have no access to electricity, water; say will vote for peace
Muzaffarnagar: 6 years on after the deadly
2013 Muzaffarnagar riots which claimed the lives of 66 people and displaced
more than 50,000, suffering of the victims continues unabated. Thousands of
victims of the deadly violence who took refuge in makeshift camp in nearby
Kairana still do not have access to basic enmities such as water or
electricity. "We have been living here for the past 6 years, we still
don't have a house, there is no water or electricity. We want houses to be
built for us. We will vote for peace in the upcoming elections," a refugee
lodged in one of the camps in nearby Kairana told ANI.The living conditions in
the refugee camps located on the outskirts of Kairana town in Shamli district
have been documented to be abysmal at best. As per a 2014 EPW report, as many
as 50,000 people were permanently expelled from the village, of which 30,000
had settled in 65 refugee colonies after the violence. “In 41 of the 65
colonies across both districts, three years after the riots, households are
still unable to build houses and instead live in makeshift houses with plastic
roofs and temporary walls,”2014 report said. Situation in nearby Saharanpur,
which was also hit by riots in 2014, is no different.Voters from Manoharpur
village in Saharanpur Lok Sabha seat have decided to boycott polls, alleging
that no development work has been done in the village since independence.
Posters have come up in the village urging villagers not to vote in upcoming
elections. Villagers from Manoharpur say,"There are many issues relating
to electricity, water & roads. No politician has visited village to address
our issues. We need written assurance else we won't vote". RLD’s Tabassum

In Saharanpur, BJP aims to split Muslim votes
to retain seat
BJP strategy in Saharanpur, it seems, is to
use Congress candidate Imran Masood’s alleged anti- Modi remarks in 2014 to
split Muslim votes between Masood and BSP’s Haji Fazlur Rehman, BSP-SP-RLD
alliance’s candidate, in order to retain the seat, according to local BJP
leaders. On Friday, PM Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in western UP
constituency, repeatedly referred to Masood’s remarks, allegedly threatening to
chop Modi into pieces — unusual for the Prime Minister to pick on a small
leader, BJP leaders point out.At the rally, BJP candidate from the seat, Raghav
Lakhanpal, compared Masood with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, and later
Suresh Rana, a state minister, repeated Lakhanpal’s remark. Earlier, on March
24, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had referred to Congress candidate as Masood Azhar’s
son-in-law.All this, local BJP leaders maintained, is part the strategy to
divide Muslim votes. A BJP leader associated with the party’s poll management
in Saharanpur said, “Imran Masood does not have the stature for the PM to
target him, but PM Modi did just that. Such statements will divide votes of
Muslims, who are the largest group of voters in this constituency, followed by
Dalits.”Nawab Pradhan, a local BSP leader looking after preparations for
Sunday’s rally, said, “Modi, Yogi and other BJP leaders are making such remarks
to project Masood as a strong candidate against the BJP. This is to influence
Muslim voters, who supports any candidate who appears to be in a position to
defeat the BJP.” Pradhan said, “BSP’s Haji Fazlur Rehman is a very strong
candidate. He will get back support of Dalit voters who had gone with BJP in
2014. Due to RLD’s support, he will also get Jat votes.” Calling Rehman a
stronger candidate compared to Masood, Pradhan said that is why BJP is “trying
to project Masood as strongest anti-BJP Muslim leader here”.indianexpress

Haryana, and that they would announce the “situation” in Delhi over the next

Congress govt. While Delhi has seven Lok Sabha seats, Haryana elects 10 members
to the Parliament. Both Delhi and Haryana will go to polls on 12 May, while
Punjab will vote on 19 May. This comes two days after Congress President Rahul

ahead of Lok Sabha elections. Congress has reportedly agreed to amend its
manifesto and grant full statehood to Delhi, excluding the NDMC areas, if it
comes to power.Until full statehood becomes a reality, Congress has agreed that

Minority report: Without Congress-AAP tie-up,
it’s advantage BJP in Delhi
New Delhi:Perhaps there hasn’t been as much
uncertainty about who the capital’s Muslim voters will support in the general
elections as this year. While BJP appears not to be the party of choice for
them, the option between Congress and AAP too is not clear, at least at this
juncture when they have not stitched up a seat-sharing arrangement. The
ambivalence over such an arrangement is troubling the community.“Our vote is
always with Congress though we trusted AAP in the previous election. But if
there is a divide, then both the parties will be decimated and BJP will easily
romp home,”said salon owner Moin Khan in Okhla, voicing the opinion of most
Muslims in Delhi. Shoaib Danish, 3-time councillor from Zakir Nagar in
south-east Delhi, too pointed out that without such an alliance, BJP would have
the advantage in the seven parliamentary seats in Delhi because the Muslim
vote, constituting 13% of the total, would be hopelessly split. The larger
belief is that Congress is placed better to take on BJP and Prime Minister
Narendra Modi. “Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi are heavyweights who can confront
Modi,” declared Anwar Zaheer, a physician at Batla House.TOI

Child rapist gets released from jail, again

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a man who had
been convicted of rape, comes out of jail and again rapes a minor. Girl, a 9-year-old,
was raped, then murdered and later the body was dumbed in a septic tank in
Mumbai. According to police, Devendra alias Gundap, had earlier raped a
5-year-old girl and was sentenced to jail. But he came out of the prison
recently and again raped a girl. It was CCTV footage that led to his
identification. The accused has been arrested. The girl, a class III student,
had gone to the shop as her mother was ill. The accused, Devendra, took her
along and raped before killing her. The incident occurred in Vile Parle. After
the girl went missing, the police launched a hunt. CCTV footage led to his
arrest. Surprisingly, Devendra, a history-sheeter was arrested and convicted
for a five-year-old girl's rape in the year 2013.But due to 'good behaviour' in

NaMo TV is a Mystery Only Because Nobody Has

Ministry of I&B has replied to Election

the Prime Minister’s picture as the brand logo, is a “special service” broadcast channel. It therefore requires no

BJP spokespersons are saying in TV debates. Amusingly, one representative

didn’t know who the owners of NaMo TV were.Even Modi, in an interview with ABP

parties to preserve minority rights as guaranteed under the Indian

India might soon have the most Caesarean
births
A new study based on the data from the
National Family and Health Survey has shown that there is a significant
increase in the rate of caesarean births in India. While the WHO recommends the
rate of caesarean delivery to be 10-15%, the number was 17.2% for India during
the period from Jan 2015 to Dec 2016. This is higher than the rate seen in rich
countries such as Netherlands and Finland. The report says that if this trend
continues, India could soon have the largest number of C-section births in the
world. But is C-section bad? A 2018 report in The Lancet pointed out that the
prevalence of maternal mortality and morbidity is higher after caesarean than
after vaginal birth. Also, it is noted to be associated with an “increased risk
of uterine rupture, abnormal placentation, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, and
preterm birth.” Many studies have pointed out that babies born via C-section
have less bacterial exposure, which in turn alters their immunity and gut
microbiome diversity. Children tend to have increased chances of allergy,
asthma, and childhood obesity.

for its future'

must take initiatives to make Israel overcome "fears for its future"
in the region, drawing criticism from Jordan. The remarks on Saturday by Yusuf
bin Alawi bin Abdullah, the minister responsible for foreign affairs in Oman,
came on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum hosted by Jordan on the
shores of the Dead Sea."West has offered Israel political, economic and
military support and it now holds all the means of power...but despite that it
fears for its future as a non-Arab country surrounded by 400 million
Arabs," he said."I believe that we Arabs must be able to look into
this issue and try to ease those fears that Israel has through initiatives and
real deals between us and Israel," he told a panel discussing geopolitics.

Netanyahu: Will Begin Annexing West Bank if He
Wins Israel Election
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told
Israel's Channel 12 News on Saturday evening that he will start extending
Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank if re-elected prime minister in the
election on April 9. It remains unclear at this point whether Netanyahu was
referring to all of the West Bank, or only parts of it."A Palestinian
state will endanger our existence and I withstood huge pressure over the past
eight years, no prime minister has withstood such pressure. We must control our
destiny," the premier said. After boasting that he was responsible for U.S.
President Donald Trump's declaration recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the
Golan Heights, Netanyahu told the program "Meet the Press":
"Will we move ahead to the next stage? Yes. I will extend sovereignty but
I don't distinguish between the settlement blocs and the isolated ones, because
each settlement is Israeli and I will not hand it over to Palestinian
sovereignty." "I will not divide Jerusalem, I will not evacuate any
community and I will make sure we control the territory west of Jordan,"
Netanyahu told the show's host, Rina Matzliah. Asked what will happen to the
Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar, which Netanyahu has vowed to evacuate but
has still not been and which has been at the center of international
condemnations against the decision, Netanyahu promised that "it will
happen, I promised and it will happen at the soonest
opportunity."haaretz.com

Khamenei urges Iraq to force out US troops ‘as
soon as possible’
Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged
Iraq on Saturday to demand US troops leave “as soon as possible”, during a
visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi that showed off Tehran’s strong
influence in Baghdad despite US pressure.Iran and US have been competing for
clout in Iraq since US-led invasion in 2003 that toppled dictator Saddam
Hussein, an enemy of both countries. Many of Iraq’s leaders, from its Shia majority,
have close ties with Iran, the main Shia power in the Middle East. Over the
past four years, both Iran and the US helped Iraq defeat Daesh fighters that
captured a third of Iraq in 2014.“You must make sure that the Americans
withdraw their troops from Iraq as soon as possible because expelling them has
become difficult whenever they have had a long military presence in a country,”
Khamenei said.middleeastmonitor

Consuming just one alcohol a day can raise
stroke risk: Study
While it is known that excessive drinking is
harmful to health, a new study suggests that even consuming one or two
alcoholic drinks a day can raise stroke risks, challenging previous claims. The
study, published in The Lancet journal, showed that alcohol directly increases
blood pressure and the chances of having a stroke. It dismissed the previous
claims that 1-2 alcoholic drinks daily might protect one against stroke, adding
that every four additional alcoholic drinks per day increased the risk of
having a stroke by about 35 per cent.“Stroke is a major cause of death and
disability. This study has shown that stroke rates are increased by alcohol.
This should help inform personal choices and public health strategies,” said
Liming Li, Professor at the Peking University in China.apnlive
