Mamata Questions Timing of Pulwama Attack, says
BJP, RSS stirring riots ahead of polls
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Monday
questioned the timing of the Pulwama attack, asking whether the Govt wanted to go to war when Lok Sabha polls were
round the corner. She also accused BJP and RSS of fomenting communal tension in
the wake of the terror assault that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF men."The Govt
knew of the matter. Intelligence inputs
were there. Then why so many people had to die? why no action was
taken?"Banerjee said she desisted from speaking against Modi Govt after
the incident but was compelled to talk about it now as "some people are
trying to teach us what patriotism is".She alleged while Govt did nothing
after the Pathankot terror assault, it was trying to "create a war-like hysteria"
ahead of the elections."I have a doubt. How they (Pakistan) have got this
encouragement when the elections are round the corner?I dont know....why after
Parliament is over. I am in doubt.... why have not we taken any action against
Pakistan in the last 5 years," she said. "When elections are knocking
on the door you are trying to stage a war... a shadow war. Amit Shah and
Narendra Modi are delivering political speeches. Even after such a big mishap
you do not resign taking responsibility and are instead delivering political
speeches," she told at a press conference. She also wanted to know why a
large convoy of CRPF personnel was allowed to move on the highway despite Govt
having intelligence inputs about a possible terror strike. Questioning the
timing of the attack, she asked, “Does this mean that US Intelligence, who had
warned of a communal riot and a terror attack before 2019 elections, they were
right?”She accused RSS-VHP-BJP combine of vitiating the atmosphere in the
country "by spreading the message of hatred". "They are trying
to trigger communal riots by taking out late night processions with national
flags. They are trying to exploit the tragedy for political dividend. It is a
planted game of RSS, VHP and the BJP. We will resist attempts to take political
advantage of the situation," she said. Banerjee sought a high-level
inquiry into the Pulwama attack and punishment to those responsible for
it."When so many people died there must be an investigation to prove who
is responsible for it. Tell me what initiatives have been taken," she
said.thequint
How did Pakistan get the courage to carry out
Pulwama attack before polls, asks Mamata
Stop blaming Pak, China for terror attacks,
give proof on Masood Azhar: Chinese media
Beijing:India should focus on redrawing its
anti-terrorism policy rather than blaming Pakistan without evidence for the
Pulwama attack and holding China responsible for blocking efforts to list JeM
chief, Masood Azhar, as a terrorist at UN also without proof, Chinese state
media has said.India has failed to provide “solid evidence” against Azhar and
China has rightly practised caution against listing him as a terrorist, the
state media comment piece said.It advised “quiet diplomacy” on India’s part to
“better address” the Azhar issue. The comment piece published in the
nationalistic tabloid Global Times — affiliated to the Communist Party of
China’s (CPC) mouthpiece, People’s Daily — dismissed New Delhi’s
assertions.“Without solid evidence, India has long accused Pakistan of
sponsoring terrorist attacks by JeM and other militant groups and China of
providing uncritical support for Pakistan,” article said.It asked a rhetorical
question: “Instead of simply blaming other countries, especially Pakistan and
China, shouldn’t the Indian Govt make
more self-introspection on its anti-terrorism policy and dwell more on how to
better administer the India-controlled part of Kashmir?”“As for the issue of
listing Azhar, Beijing has reiterated its stand several times that New Delhi
should provide solid facts and proofs for banning Azhar.”The article added that
China has reason to cautiously handle the issue. “Observers worry that
blacklisting Azhar could be used by India to increase its military pressure on
Pakistan, thus risking exacerbating tensions between the 2 countries.”It also
dismissed the argument that by blocking India’s bid to proscribe Azhar, China
was supporting terrorism.“Citing China’s refusal to support the bid to have
Azhar blacklisted by the UN, India in recent years has aggressively blamed
China for allying with Pakistan in shielding terrorists. It disregards the fact
that as a victim of terrorism itself, China has pledged to support the
international community’s anti-terrorism efforts and stands ready to work with
India and all other countries to fight terrorism,” the article said.“Should New
Delhi resort to quiet diplomacy instead of extensively directing aggressive
rhetoric to pressure Beijing, the Azhar issue could have been better addressed.”Blaming
Pakistan and China could also disrupt the anti-terrorism efforts under the
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which admitted New Delhi and Islamabad
in 2017, the Global Times said.HT

Israel to withhold millions of dollars in

Israel says it will withhold $138m in tax
transfers to the Palestinian Authority(PA) over payments given to Palestinians involved in attacks against

in stipends to Palestinians jailed in Israel, their families, and released
prisoners. The money comes from taxes
Israel collects on behalf of the PA.Israel transfers the tax funds to PA on a
regular basis as outlined by a 1994 economic agreement. Israel says the PA's
payments to the families of those jailed for attacks encourage violence - a
claim the Palestinians reject.PA sees them as a kind of welfare system for
families who have lost a breadwinner. The system is referred to by Israel as

round of talks between rebel and US will be held on Feb.25 in Doha as panned earlier.Last
month the 2 sides held detailed talks and there were indications that they have
come closer to end over 17 years of conflict. Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry
reacted strongly to the announcement of a meeting in Islamabad, saying it was
in violation of a UNSC resolution.Previously, Afghanistan launched a similar
complaint against Russia for allowing Taliban to travel to Moscow for a
conference.PTI
Saudi leads efforts to change Arab Peace
Initiative with Israel
Saudi Arabia is seeking to modify the Arab
Peace Initiative in order to better align it with the Kingdom’s current warming
of relations with Israel.Citing senior sources close to Palestinian Authority
(PA), Al Khaleej Online reported yesterday that the Kingdom is seeking to make
“basic changes” to the initiative, noting that these efforts are being led by Saudi
King Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS).During a 2002
meeting, Arab League approved the Saudi-led Arab Peace Initiative to be the
basis for any relationship with Israel. It stipulates the creation of a
Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, adopting
a just solution for refugees and Israel’s withdrawal from the Syrian Golan
Heights and occupied Lebanese territories, in return for Arab recognition of
Israel. According to the PA sources, Arab countries did not commit to the terms
of the deal, pointing to Saudi, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt’s overt normalisation
with Israel and covert normalisation of many other countries.MEMO

Thousands of Yemenis have participated in
rallies across the country, including the capital Sana’a, to reject
normalisation with Israel and attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause. The
participants rejected what they called “suspicious meetings” and steps towards
normalisation by Foreign Minister Khalid Yamani at the Warsaw Conference which
took place in the Polish capital last week. They also stressed that the steps
do not represent the Yemeni peoples’ view, who are known longstanding support
of the Palestinian people. The head of the Houthi Supreme Revolutionary
Committee, said the alliance with Israel is despicable, describing the Warsaw
Conference as “an American-Israeli” meeting and not an Arab or Islamic
meeting.middleeastmonitor

normalisation

countries’ normalisation with Israel, slamming those ministers who met with
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at last week’s Warsaw Conference Speaker of
Kuwait’s Assembly Marzouq Al-Ghanim affirmed Kuwait’s “principled and firm
position” against normalisation with Israel, stressing it was one of few Arab
countries that had not acquiesced to building ties with Israel.Al-Ghanim said
he “wish[ed] there wasn’t a picture of any Arab or Kuwaiti official with any
official of [Israel],” responding to allegations that the presence of a Kuwaiti
official in a group photo of conference attendees signalled a change in his
country’s stance towards Israel.middleeastmonitor
Netanyahu secretly met Morocco foreign
minister
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu secretly met
Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser
Bourita, on the side-lines of UN General Assembly meeting last Sept. The
revelation was made by Israel’s Channel 13, which quoted an anonymous senior
Israeli official as saying that Netanyahu and Bourita discussed normalisation
of diplomatic relations between the two countries and what the source described
as “the mutual struggle to face the Iranian threat”.Israeli channel confirmed
that Netanyahu tried to push Morocco to invite him to visit the North African
country, an effort which failed and Morocco has since vehemently denied. Netanyahu’s

Yemen's warring sides agree to pullback from
Hodeidah: UN
Yemen's warring sides have agreed on the first
phase of a pullback of forces from the key city of Hodeidah, in a deal the UN
has described as "important progress". Hodeidah, which is located on
Yemen's western coast and provides access to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait - the
fourth busiest waterway in the world - has been in Houthi hands since 2014,
when the armed group staged a takeover of large swaths of Yemen. The move
prompted the military intervention of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and allies the
following year on behalf of the embattled Govt , triggering what UN calls the
world's worst humanitarian crisis. Following two days of talks in Hodeidah, the
Govt and Houthis finalised a deal on the
first phase of the pullback and also agreed in principle on the second phase, a
UN statement said on Sunday.aljazeera

Iran's vital oil sector. Saudi welcomed the move."Iran is ready to work
