Muslim organisations too
oppose triple talaq as is practised now: Law panel chairpman
New Delhi:A majority of
those who had responded to its questionnaire on a uniform civil code, including
many Muslims organisations, have opposed spontaneous triple talaq, Law
Commission chairperson Justice BS Chauhan has said. The panel is currently
examining the more than 40,000 responses it has received to the questionnaire
issued in Oct.2016. Justice Chauhan said the larger consensus was that
spontaneous triple talaq, as is currently practised, was not in keeping with
what was stated in the Shariat, which mandates a three-month iddat period meant
for reconciliation and arbitration.“While we are yet to tabulate the huge
number of responses, one thing we have observed is that most people, even among
the Muslims, have opposed the practice of spontaneous triple talaq. They have
held that iddat period should be observed,” said Chauhan. He said, “In Dec.,Justice
Mohammad Mustaq of Kerala High Court delivered a judgment examining the
validity of triple talaq and sent it to the Law Commission, referring the
matter to us. Those who have been alleging that this exercise carries forward
the govt’s agenda should understand that with the court order, we are bound to
examine the matter now.”At the same time, Chauhan clarified that the commission
is not only looking at triple talaq but at the issue of gender justice in
personal laws of all religions, in terms of marriage, divorce, child custody
and property rights. “Why are we only talking of triple talaq? Except for
certain matriarchal societies, such as those in parts of the Northeast, most
women still have no right to agricultural land. We will be looking at gender
justice in all aspects of personal law. Never before in India has any law
commission sought responses from people. This was a first-of-its-kind
experiment. In any developed country, law is made after consultation with
stakeholders. After all, enforcement of law depends upon acceptability of law,”

Politicians raising triple
talaq issue for vote bank: Women activists
Moradabad/ahmedabad:
Terming the Central Govt’s stand to ban triple talaq as a ‘vote bank politics’,
Hina Zaheer on Monday said the leaders are politicising the issue to woo the
voters ahead of the assembly elections. “The matter of triple talaq is
sub-judice and thus no one can take law into his/her hand. Why leaders are
politicising the issue. We as Muslim women are persistently demanding to follow
the talaq procedure as per the Quran. The matter is being raised by the
politicians at a time when elections are around the corner and this clearly
shows that this is mere a vote bank politics. They are just trying to woo
voters in the name of triple talaq,” Zaheer told ANI.Meanwhile, women activist
Zakia Soman called for an action against triple talaq saying that it is not an
issue of politics and must be restricted.ANI

Rohingya crisis: Hoardings
around Jammu ask Muslim ethnic group to 'leave or face consequences'
Jammu: They gathered,
around a shack, to discuss an unusual situation that is threatening to rob them
of their livelihood and their settlements, once again. On Friday, dozens of
hoardings popped up in the entire Jammu city asking Rohingyas, a Muslim ethnic
group that has faced persecution at the hands of majority-Buddhists in Myanmar
for decades, to immediately leave the city or they will be thrown
out."Where will we go," Mohammad Johar, 35, who was among the first
batch of refugees to arrive in this city, said, as he caressed his
four-year-old daughter near his Juggie. “It is not easy to find a place to live
and make a living,” he adds.J&K govt recently said that more than 1,200 Rohingya
families, comprising of 6,000 people, have been living in different parts of
Jammu for the last six years. They are registered with the UN High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR) and also with the Union Home Ministry. But now, they are
at the crossroads of a fierce political debate raging in this winter capital,
whether they should be allowed, at all, to live in the state.“Does the state
law permit them (Rohingyas) to settle here in any part of the state? Article
370 does not allow anyone to settle here in J&K ,” Harshdev Singh, JKNPP
Chairman, said. “If the state govt does
not throw them out, we will do that.”The hoardings put by the J&K National Panthers Party threatens that
Rohingya and Bangladeshis should leave Jammu immediately or face the
consequences. However, these persecuted people have found little support from
both mainstream as well as separatist politicians.Inside a Rohingya camp, in
Narwal area of Jammu, residents gather to discuss the explicit threat and
explore the possibility of meeting political leaders and appraise them about
their condition back home and their reason for migration. Firstpost

With less than a week to go
for UP elections, communal and casteist propaganda has reached a crescendo: ET
Political parties can
tom-tom development till the cows come home, but in UP it is caste and religion
that inevitably rear their head in election season. With less than a week to go
for the state elections, communal and casteist propaganda has reached a
crescendo. BJP has Ram temple and a new version of love jihad in anti-Romeo
squads on its agenda, the BSP is aggressively wooing Muslims — in addition to
its traditional vote bank of Dalits — by giving 100 tickets to candidates from
that community, and the SP has the Congress in tow in the hope of snaring
Muslim and upper-caste votes. ET travelled to three pockets in UP — of Muslims,
Dalits and upper-caste Hindus — to gauge the fervour on the ground. And we find
that vote bank politics may have never been so predictable.ET
UP Polls: Shah invokes cow
slaughter narrative in Noida
Noida;BJP president Amit
Shah on Sunday invoked cow politics at a rally in Noida. He also made a
reference to slaughterhouses, in a joke, juxtaposing it with a specific caste. “An
aggrieved elderly citizen belonging to the Jat community once visited our
office to register his complaint. He told me that one morning, while he was
carrying his sugarcanes in a bullock cart to the nearby market for sale, he
stopped mid-way to buy guavas. When he came back with the guavas, his bull was
missing. I told him to register a complaint with the police because the UP
police was already tracking Azam Khan’s lost buffaloes. But then he revealed
that his bull was stolen by the slaughterhouse people,” Shah said.As the crowd
cheered to his dog-whistle narrative, Shah announced that the BJP, when it is
voted to power, will come down on slaughterhouses from Day 1. “When BJP comes
to power in UP, we will ban all unregulated slaughterhouses on Day 1,” Shah
said.HT

Even as the Opposition

part of the authorities to hold up announcement of E Ahamed’s death, the
medically qualified members of the former minister’s family have issued a
blow-by blow account questioning RML hospital doctors’ claims on Tuesday
night.Ahamed’s daughter Dr Fousiya and her husband Dr Babu Shehzad had found
something amiss in every step that the hospital doctors were adopting on
Tuesday night. A new statement issued by the family challenges each step taken
by RML doctors on medical terms.“Finally at 2AM, cardiothoracic surgeon and
neurologist called us inside after a lot of protest. The neurologist told us
that brain stem function was not present which means he had no brain function.
As he was on AutoPulse until that time, he had no cardiac function. He was on a
ventilator receiving full oxygen and still had no blood oxygen saturation,
meaning he had no lung function. This means that he was already clinically
dead, and there was no further need for another medical procedure,” family said
in the statement.“We are traumatised by what he had been subjected to. There
has been an absolute disregard to human dignity by RML hospital,” the family

Share of spend in govt expenditure, GDP on education falling for 3

Spending on education as a
share of the central govt 's total budgeted expenditure has been falling for
the past three years. Compared to 2013-14, the last year of UPA, when education

the govt for 2017-18.

sent to the President for the final selection, a section within AMU has started

which it was clearly mentioned that UGC Regulations, 2010, had to be followed
while finalising the panel for a VC's post so that no complication and delay
may happen while submitting the panel to the visitor (President) for

Israel's settlement bill
'big step towards annexation'
Occupied West Bank: Israeli
Knesset has advanced controversial legislation that, if approved, would lead to
a host of illegal settlements built on privately owned Palestinian land being
legalised retroactively. The so-called "Regulation Bill", scheduled
for a vote on Monday, would apply to around 4,000 settlement homes in the West
Bank for which settlers could prove ignorance that they had built on privately
owned land and had received encouragement from the Israeli state to do so.The
bill has been criticised by human rights groups and legal experts who have
warned that it would violate property rights. The govt 's attorney general has
said that the bill was unconstitutional and would contradict Israel's legal
obligations under international law, while Israeli MK Tzipi Livni warned that
it would lead Israeli soldiers to the ICC. aljazeera

Islamic authority rejects
Egypt’s move to annul Muslim man’s verbal divorce right
Cairo:Egypt’s top Islamic
authority Monday rejected President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s suggestion that
legislation be adopted to invalidate the practice of Muslim men verbally
divorcing their wives. It marked a rare instance of a public institution
contradicting the president, who has presided over a wide-scale crackdown on
dissent in recent years while seeking to rally the country’s entrenched
interests behind him. Council of Senior Clerics in Al-Azhar, the highest
authority in Sunni Islam, unanimously ruled that verbal divorce, when meeting
all requirements, has been an undisputed practice since the days of the 7th
century Prophet Muhammad. The requirements, it explained, included that the man
has a sound mind, full consciousness and uses appropriate phrasing.Muslim women
in Egypt cannot verbally divorce their husbands but can apply for divorce in a
court of law. In a carefully-worded statement, the council made no mention of
el-Sissi, or his suggestion last month for legislation requiring such divorces
to be carried out in the presence of a state-authorised cleric. It was
addressed to “the people”.However, its rejection of the president’s proposal
was uncompromising, and it made a thinly-veiled reference to the constitution,
which refers to Al-Azhar as the main authority on religious and Islamic
affairs.AP

her about the now famous photo in which she is holding a copy of the Holy
Qur’an.Lohan said that she was going through a lot when that photo was taken,
and the Qur’an was “a solace and a safe thing for me to have.”“My intention

book, but people in America didn’t like it, they judged me for it and were
saying nasty things.”She told Rashid that she has prayed the Islamic way and
has fasted in Ramadan.“I did Ramadan for 3 days with my friend from Kuwait, it
was hard but it was good. It felt good,” she said. She said she has read 15
