Muslim Personal Law Board to
oppose any move to alter family laws of Muslims
New Delhi : All-India Muslim Personal Law Board,
an organisation that lobbies for Shariah or Islamic law in family matters, has
said it would oppose any move to alter family laws of Muslims as it stands and
would approach the Supreme Court to be made a party in case such as move was
afoot. “If any move is being planned by the judiciary, we will obviously be a
party and appear before the court. On the face of it, I would say we can never
accept any tinkering of Muslim personal laws,” Maulana Wali Rahmani, acting
general secretary of the influential law board, told HT. India allows
communities to be governed by their religious norms in family matters such as
like marriage, inheritance and divorce. For Muslims, the Shariah Act of 1937
applies. One general concern is that some of these laws are discriminatory towards
women. Two judges of the apex court sought to set up a bench to examine parts
of Islamic law applicable to areas such as marriage and succession of property
with a view to ensure gender equality.HT

Haryana education dept
magazine says beef source of iron: TOI
Chandigarh: A chapter in a magazine issued by
the Haryana education department has cited beef as one of the best sources to
enhance the body's iron absorption. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar is the chief patron of the

Mangalore: Riot breaks out after
Muslim barber refuses to shut shop on Tuesday
Bengaluru:A Muslim barber refused to shut shop
“as per custom”, triggering a riot by indignant members of the Hindu community
at Nelliyadi village, 70km from Mangalore, in Karnataka on Tuesday. Though the
violence was brought under control a few hours after it erupted around 4 pm,
dozens of people were injured and property worth lakhs destroyed in the melee. Bajrang Dal leader
Ravi Ballya told HT that the trouble started when the barber, Salman, refused
to “respect local sentiments” and keep his shop shut on Tuesdays. “It is
well-known that Hindus don’t cut their hair on Tuesdays. Salman was initially a
nice boy. He used to respect our wishes and close his shop then. But in the
last few weeks, he stopped doing that because some PFI leaders filled his head
with poison,” Ballya said.Kempi Mustafa, the head of the local masjid, said
this was not the first time Kumar and Ballya had stoked communal tension in the
area. Alleging that both are accused in criminal cases, he said this was just
the latest in a string of incidents aimed at disrupting the communal harmony of
coastal Karnataka. Meanwhile, the situation continued to be tense in at least 4 villages near Nelliyadi
– Kokkada, Patrame, Golithottu and Ballya. The police have so far arrested 9
men from both communities, and imposed curfew in the area. HT
Supreme Court Judgement on

Kochi: Supreme Court’s direction to scrap
reservation in higher education has elicited sharp reactions with activists and
community organisations pointing out that the court was overstepping its

chairman of the Muslim Education Society (MES), said that they are nonsensical
and amounts to playing with fire. “The judge was quoted as saying that ‘some
privilege remained unchanged 68 years after Independence,’ which is totally
wrong. They should read history more. In the case of OBCs, national level
reservation was implemented only in 2005,” the MES chairman pointed out. “The
judgement deceives ‘class thinking’ of the judiciary,” the MES chairman
observed.M Geetanandan of Adivasi Gotra Mahasabha, said that the judgment,

circumstances simply because it's no longer possible for any Urdu writer worth
his salt to remain indifferent. "Being otherwise would be against Urdu's

Pakistan sold Iran nuke tech
in 1980s, ex-President Rafsanjani reveals: Praveen Swami's story
New Delhi: Ex-Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has confirmed that his
country received nuclear technology from Pakistan. The assertion, made in an
interview published on Thursday, undermines Islamabad’s long-standing claims
that its supply of technology and material to Iran, Libya and North Korea was
the work of a rogue network run by the country’s former nuclear czar, Abdul
Qadeeer Khan.In an interview published by website Iran’s Nuclear Hope,
Rafsanjani says “Abdul Qadeer Khan believed that the Islamic world had to have
a nuclear bomb… The Pakistanis agreed to help us somewhat”.“We were at war, and
we wanted to have such an option for the day our enemies wanted to use nuclear
weapons. This was our state of mind,” said the former Iranian president. The AQ
Khan network is suspected to have supplied Iran with designs for its P1-type
aluminium-rotor centrifuges, during a visit the scientist made to its Bushehr
nuclear facility in 1986, Later, in between 1994 and 1996, Iran received
components for 500 centrifuges, a deal that was followed up with designs for
the more advanced P2 centrifuges, which began operating from 2002.Iran’s
now-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Ali Khamenei, who has held the position since
1989, also travelled to Pakistan without success, Rafsanjani added. The timeline
revealed by Rafsanjani confirms reports that Iran-Pakistan nuclear cooperation
was sanctioned by military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq, who held power until his
assassination in 1988. Indian Express
US, world powers save space
for Iran at Syria talks
Washington: Iran could join international talks
over Syria’s future for the first time later this week, as the United States
declared itself ready to engage its long-time foe, if it might helps halt
Syria’s four-year civil war. Washington still waits to hear if Tehran will
attend the next round of discussions, expected to start Thursday and continue
till Friday in Vienna.Secretary of State John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister
Sergey Lavrov and several top European and Arab diplomats will be attending,
familiar cast that up to now hasn’t included any Iranian representatives. State
Dept. spokesman John Kirby said that the arrangements for Vienna were still
being finalized, but that “we anticipate that Iran will be invited to attend
this upcoming meeting.”While the US doesn’t approve of Iran’s “destabilizing
activities” in Syria, Kirby said American officials “always have recognized
that at some point in the discussion, moving toward a political transition, we
have to have a conversation and a dialogue with Iran.” On the other hand, all
previous international efforts have done nothing to stop the fighting, and
Kerry is trying to unite all sides with influence in the Arab country around a
common vision of a peaceful, secular and pluralistic Syria governed with the
consent of its people. President Barack Obama and Saudi King Salman spoke about
cooperating closely to fight the Islamic State and “establish the conditions
for a political transition in Syria,” according to a White House statement.
They vowed to build on recent diplomatic efforts. AP

Iranian newspaper criticises
Iran’s military intervention in Syria, pro Assad policies
Iranian newspaper Bihar has for the first time
criticised the Iranian intervention in Syria, noting that the accelerated
developments in the Syrian battlefields have increased the number of deaths
among Iranian military leaders, Arabi21.com reported on Wednesday.“Iranian
military leaders went to Syria for military consultations,” the Iranian
newspaper said, “but we see that most of the Iranian military leaders were
killed in the battlefields in Aleppo.”The newspaper said that Russian
interference is playing a basic role in reinforcing the axis between Russian,
Hezbollah, Iran and Syria, but that the large number of casualties among
Iranians proves that the Syrian opposition is receiving arms and logistical
support from other players. It also expected that the Syrian crisis would not be
resolved soon, criticising the Iranian strategy based on simply protecting
Al-Assad. “If Iran needs to protect its interests in the region, and for this
must protect the Syrian regime, Iran could support a new regime without
Al-Assad,” the newspaper said. The newspaper criticised the red lines imposed by
Iran regarding the Syrian issue. “Putting red lines on the Syrian crisis closes
the road towards a political solution and makes [Iran] an obstacle in the face
of the political solutions,” the newspaper added. The newspaper concluded that
it is impossible to adopt the policy of supporting Al-Assad forever, because
this logic complicates the situation. middleeastmonitor

JK Rowling Criticises Israel

Sydney most hostile to Muslims

support for multiculturalism in mainland capital cities, but with differences
most pronounced in sentiment towards Muslims.Only 16 % of Melburnians reported a negative view of
